Home Furnishing Tips: Scale and Space

Not all furniture is made to fit every space. In fact, when I walk in to a home, the overwhelming majority of people have purchased furniture that is too large or too small for their Florida house. From dark overstuffed sectionals that make a “florida-room” feel even smaller than it is, to grande poster-beds suites that take-over bedrooms built with 8’ ceiling heights. On the opposite spectrum, newer constructed homes offer the opportunity to furnish a home with a few larger scaled showpieces. However, many people instead fill these spaces with tons of little pieces that make the space look cluttered and unbalanced.

It drives me crazy…because the right sized furniture does exist!

Here are some tips that will help you decide what size, color, and amount of furniture you need to make your space feel and look it’s best.

Start with the sofa. Light and bright are the best colors for a small space. Opt for a sofa that has a higher leg to keep the room airy, which will make it seem larger. Look for styles that are classic and transitional, stay away from trendy designs that will make your home seem outdated sooner than you want. We carry Capris Furniture which offers a plentiful line of small-scaled custom living room upholstery and a fabulous fabric selection.

Want to lounge in the living room? No problem, just stay away from cluttering the room with more than one or two pieces that recline. Look for a reclining sofa that doesn't look like it does. These specialty sofas will coordinate much better with an occasional chair(s) better than bulky reclining furniture. We carry Best Home Furnishing’s full line of beautiful reclining upholstery at affordable prices.

Next, tackle the dining room. The sofa and dining table should set off your style and scale. If your space is large, choose at least a 72’’ dining table. There are so many great options for self-storing extension leaves on the market. Have an open floor plan with limited space and a dire need for storage? Don’t be afraid to use a storage buffet behind your sofa to create a separation of space for each seating area. Sofas don’t always need to go against a wall. Dining rooms don’t always being in a separate room. Finally, mix up your shapes! If you have a rectangular cocktail table and end tables, choose a round dining table. This tip will ensure your space is balanced and interesting. We love the versatile dining options from Homelegance and the fabulous customizable upholstery line from CMI .
